Stansted Airport, found in Essex, is Britain’s third busiest airport. Located near the village of Stansted Mountfitchet, the airport services flights to Europe and the Mediterranean. Stansted Airfield saw its origins during the second world war and was a base for the American allies. Charter flights started operating from the airfield in 1949 and by the 1960’s, under BAA control, holiday operators began to make use of the airport, and further development began.  
Internationally acclaimed architect Norman Foster designed the main terminal building which opened in 1969. The building is meant to convey the impression of a stylised swan flying, with its inverted pyramid supported roof “floating”.
